Chipmakers and governments, including the US government, have in recent years invested billions in efforts to diversify chip production, but many experts worry that process is not happening fast enough. TSMC produces an estimated 90% of the world’s most advanced semiconductor chips, which power countless devices people rely on daily. Still, even an hours-long shutdown of certain chip production could take weeks to recover from. The race to diversify chipmakingWednesday’s earthquake will likely only add pressure to efforts underway for years to grow chipmaking capacity outside of Taiwan. Experts say it’s a sign that the diversification of the chip supply chain is not moving quickly enough to account for the risks of remaining concentrated in Taiwan.

Ihnat said that data for September showed the use by Russia of Iranian-designed Shahed kamikaze drones would smash last year's figure. "This autumn and winter ... is already a record in terms of the number of Shahed drones. He contrasted this number with Russia's air strike campaign on Ukraine last winter, when he said about 1,000 Shahed drones were used in six months.

☆ Stellantis puts Michigan plants in 'critical status' ahead of union talks

Stellantis told workers at both facilites the plants will be in “critical status” from July 5 through October 2. In the past, automakers have built up inventory of their most popular vehicles ahead of the UAW contract deadline and possible strike action. Headed into this year’s talks, Detroit automakers had lean inventories compared to the past. Production cuts forced by semiconductor shortages and efforts by all three Detroit automakers to keep prices high mean they have thinner cushions going into the fall. Formal contract negotiations between the Detroit Three automakers and UAW leaders are set to begin on July 13.
